About the production

Freya, is a great opportunity for anyone interested in or studying performing and creative arts. You don't need to have experience or belong to an established drama or music group.

There are lots of different job roles that make up a production. Some are 'on stage' for example, the actors, singers and dancers. Some are 'back stage' such as, makeup artists, the stage crew who change the scenery, operated the sound and lighting. Then there is the front of house team who provide publicty, greet the audience and a range of other tasks! All of them are an essential part of the team.

We need young people (aged 11yrs upwards) and volunteers to make this production possible and an enjoyable and  rewarding experience for everyone involved.

We have now cast the speaking roles but don't let that put you off being involved!
We are continue to consider applications. There are lots of ensemble roles.

29.04.19: Due to one of the cast being unable to continue, we are still looking for a male actor (acting age 18/19 yrs)

Musicians, Stage Crew, Front of House - there are lots of opportunities available.

Rehearsal and performance dates

We know just how busy young people are during term-time so we are running the production during the holidays so as many people can be involved as possible without it clashing with other school and club peformances you might be involved with. It is a big commitment and listed below are the proposed dates for main rehearsals and performance.

These may change!

For example there may be additional/ different dates for costume making or musicians etc. Once we know who would like to be involved and whether there are common clashes we will be able to confirm the schedule.

So for now, don't rule out being involved until after the February sessions. We understand you might already have commitments during February half-term. We want to create the best stage production possible and will be as flexible as possible we will consider arranging another information session.

DON'T DELAY! REGISTER YOUR INTEREST SO WE KNOW YOU ARE INTERESTED!

FREYA, INVITES YOUNG PEOPLE TO TAKE PART IN A NEW YOUTH POP MUSICAL!

BlueBoxt has teamed up with local artist, Piers Browne, to stage an exciting new youth adaptation of his evocative musical, Freya.

The new stage adaptation, by Colin Bailey, Mark Cronfield and Alastair McLachlan, will create the mystical story of romance and heartache set in wartime Wensleydale during the 1940s. With the performances planned for this summer, the creative team is now looking for talented cast and crew members!

“We want to hear from young people who have an interest in all aspects of music and theatre production.” says production coordinator Colin Bailey. “We need actors, singers, dancers, musicians, costume, makeup artists, sound and lighting technicians and stage crew to make Freya the musical happen.”

“We’ve chosen the school holidays as our main rehearsal and performance time because we know just how busy creative young people are in the area,“ explains Freya’s creator Piers Browne. “There are lots of talented young people in the region who study or take part in music and drama. Freya will enable them to come together with other like-minded individuals and professionals to create high quality and entertaining musical theatre.  I’m really excited and look forward seeing the finished results this summer.”

Anyone interested should register as soon as possible.

Questions and Queries

Some common questions and queries have been received so we thought we would share them here...

My half-term is a different week to North Yorkshire Schools - am I excluded?
No, hopefully you can still make the information session on Sunday 24th February. This will give you a good idea of how we plan to deliver the rehearsal sessions. We are sorry you can't attend the two full-day workshop but there will be plenty of other sessions during the production process. We will double check the planned rehearsal dates work for everyone who registers to take part.

I can't make Sunday 24th February because of a previous commitment - am I excluded?
No, just let us know you are interested in taking part and we will see what we can do to arrange another information session or arrange time for a chat.

I am auditioning for my Youth Theatre/ School production so might be part of another production at the same time - will this be OK?
Yes, as long as the dates work and you feel you can commit fully to both productions. These are all great opportunities and we hope you get a lot of enjoyment and experience that you can bring to our production of Freya. We are happy to have a chat with you so you can make an informed, and inparticial, decision that is right for you.

I am 19 (or older)/ have left school/ work as an apprentice/ study at College/ University - can I still be involved?
Yes, there are a number of parts/ roles suited to older performers. We have purposefully chosen the summer when exams are over and students will be home for the holidays. This production will be ideal for those learning their craft, looking to gain experience, demonstrate skills for their portfolio or taking part in a hobby activity they enjoy.

The creative team are flexible in their approach and welcome creative ideas from everyone involved. Our ethos is built on respecting each other and allowing everyone to express themselves. We encourage mentoring and skills sharing and believe we all have something to offer and are never too old to learn and develop new methods and ways of working.

We already have a family holiday/ school music tour booked and some of the dates clash?
Don't worry, as long as we know the dates we mighteft  be able to schedule rehearsals/ performances to work for everyone. You might not be the only person in this position! We will try and be as flexible as possible so contact us first before taking a decision.

What will I get out of being involved?
There are lots of benefits you can get when you take part in a community production. Here are a few...

An opportunity to work alongside professionals and meet with other like-minded young people from the area who may attend a different school, college or group.

A chance to find out whether the performing arts is an area you are interested in and would like to do more by joinging a group of choosing to study.

A chance to boost your CV or personal statement by showing activities you are involved with outside of school.

A chance to gain a nationally recognised qualification by studying for An Arts Award which can offer UCAS points for entry into university. [Arts Award is very similar to the DofE (Duke of Edinburgh Awards for outdoor activities). Young people identify a new skill to research and learn, volunteer to share and present an artform and present their achievements. Levels include Discover and Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold.]

What if I have never been in a musical before?
Come along and see if you like it! Some participants might be a member of a drama group, dance school or music ensemble or may never have had the opportunity to take part in a production before. We are providing an opportunity to come together with other like-minded individuals and work alongside professionals to create high quality and entertaining musical theatre.

Does it cost to take part?
We are fortunate that an anonymous donor has sponsored the bulk of the production costs. We are looking for extra support as well. We do not anticipate you having to pay to take part but your friends and family will need to buy tickets to see the performances. Please note there will be some costs associated with studying an Arts Award. This is an optional extra and costs will depend on the level of award chosen.

Is it just an amateur youth musical?
We are afraid not - we have the same expectation as if we were working with professionals! We expect everyone to be fully commited and work as a team - we have a challenging task ahead if we are to meet our performance deadline in July and deliver a highly polished and high quality production for our audiences to enjoy. That said, we know it will be both hard work and demanding but also a very rewarding and enjoyable experience too.
